the end

by on Dec.26, 2011, under Uncategorized

as you’ve likely noticed, this blog is really not getting updated any time soon. i am very aware of this, and i do apologize, but i will likely be letting the domain expire soon. i am not pleased with godaddy (the webhost i had been using), and i honestly do not really have the time to update here any more.

i can be found, sometimes, on g+, twitter, and etsy.

by on Aug.16, 2011, under Uncategorized

so. it seems the theme i was using was broken and killing my entire blog. so i have switched. not sure i’ll stick with this one yet.

new apartment.

new job.

pax is coming.

i know this is rather a craptastic update, but everything has been broken, and life has been SUPER busy.

i will get a real post up here as soon as i can. really. i think.

new content is coming

by on Jun.29, 2011, under Uncategorized

yep, i know it’s been months, yet again. i’ve just managed to get myself onto unemployment, and i’ve had some really busy days, and more busy days are coming. i will be moving, pretty certainly, in early august, and then pax hits. and hopefully, somewhere in there, i will be re-employed.
to tide you over though, i’ve got some small tidbits to share, prompted by questions i keep running across in comments that are likely otherwise spam.
1. what blog platform do you use?
wordpress, with some help and tweaks from my server admin
2. what theme do you use, is it free, and can i have it?
it’s called ‘duffy’, it is free, and it is not under my control, so i am sure you can have it if you find it online.
3.  do you know where i can hire some professional writers?
no, unfortunately, i do not have that sort of resource for you, but you can always contact and hire me.  i write, i edit, i research.
4.  do you know how i can get a job at (insert tech company here)?
apply via their job page.  all the local tech companies are pretty competitive though, so get your info in order before you hit the apply button.  also, look into linkedin (and other similar sites) and be ready to do job fairs, meetups, and other networking events.  and tell me i should take my own advice!
5.  why don’t you post more often?
i try, but a) i forget things easily and b) i’m often very busy taking care of a great multitude of things and c) i don’t often have topics readily available (though i should!).
do you have other questions for me, or ideas for things to research and post about?  leave a comment :)

i know it’s a wall of text. having formatting issues once again, and it was either this, or a huge mess with answers in the middle of un-related questions. i love blogging!

testing

by on Jun.28, 2011, under Uncategorized

this is a test post to help melody with a new plugin (which you will likely note i have installed as well). feel free to post a test comment with your blog address, and we can then see if it is working on my end as well.

the power of the internets

by on Apr.24, 2011, under Uncategorized

so, a couple days ago, i received a bottle of something called veev (which, amusigly reminds me of viiv) from klout perks, via twitter.

i’ve been trying the stuff out, and it’s pretty decent.

so, at some point soon, i will be posting some recipes.  the bottle came with it’s own press kit and recipes, but you know me.  i experiment.  i just need to experiment more before making a full post *hic*.

you’ve been warned.

the t-mobile crisis

by on Apr.09, 2011, under tech

okay, so maybe crisis is too harsh a word.

but, the fact remains, t-mobile is being acquired by at&t.  and this affects me.

why do i even care?

i’ve been with t-mobile for about 7 or so years now, and even though there’s been a couple service outages and other issues during that time, they have always fixed those problems, properly compensated me for said problems, and have always provided excellent customer service to me at all times.  they have let me slide on late payments when i was in dire straits, money wise.  they have given me discounts and benefits that most customers never even hear of.  and they’ve let me get away with so much bullshit it’s amazing (though i try not to go crazy with this last thing).

and now at&t is buying them.  the why of it can be summed up thus:  at&t’s network cannot handle their customers.  that’s right, at&t bit off more than it could chew, and now they’re taking over another network to try to fix their fuck ups.

t-mobile’s official release states that this will be a good solution for both networks’ customers, but i doubt this to be reality.  what do i think will really happen?  at&t’s network/customers *may* get a relief from the overload, but i think both networks will quickly become bogged down with bandwidth overload.

so, i will be leaving t-mobile once the acquisition is completed, if not before.

the search for a new mobile carrier has begun.  sprint is out of the question, as there is some bad history between myself and them.  verizon and virgin mobile are in the running, but both would require a cdma (non-sim card) capable phone.  there really aren’t too many other carriers here, are there?

yay, first world problems!

perhaps i’ve been in hibernation.

by on Jan.30, 2011, under crafty, Uncategorized

okay.  very sorry about the huge hiatus.  let’s see if i can manage some sort of synopsis (over the next couple posts) of some of the things we’ve been up to around here over the holidays.

1.  inspired by starbucks

two christmases ago, i was able to acquire this incredible yarn ball and ornament wreath from the starbucks i frquented at the time.  in my opinion, it was part of one of the best holiday designs starbucks had ever created, and it is still hanging in my closet today.  no, i didn’t manage to put it up this year, for many reasons.  but it is there where i can sometimes see it throughout the year, and it makes me smile every single time. well, that wreath became the inspiration for this year’s homemade wintergifts.

these are two of the four (we think, might have been more…) that we made and gave away.  we learned a lot during this project about planning, and improv, and yarn.  and a huge thanks needs to be given to kat who provided pretty much all of the yarn for this project :)

next week i hope to be back to share more, but i have to add one little thing.  over the hiatus, i started a new long-term project and opened up an etsy shop.  those interested can get a peek here.

enjoy!

new year = new spam measures (and more)

by on Jan.02, 2011, under Uncategorized

yes, i realize i’ve been gone almost a month.  it happens, especially around holiday time.  there’ve been many projects going on behind the scenes, and time has been far more than precious.

i’m not sure anyone else has noticed, but comments on this blog have kind of gone mad.  i know there are some of you who deal with this, and know what i am looking at when i say i cannot always figure out which comments are true comments, and which are spam.  there’s just soooo many that go through the comment logs, and i don’t know the entirety of my readership, so i’ve had to think of ways to figure out what’s what.

so, here’s my solution, for now:

if the comment is either absolute gibberish, or has a company name or keyword for a name, it’s getting deleted.  i know this will bring the comment count way down, but it will hopefully also help protect those of you who are actually reading.

okay, that’s it for now.  i will be doing my best to get some sort of post-holiday entry up soon.

post-food coma updates

by on Dec.05, 2010, under comment contest

the holidays are always quite busy around here, with food ideas and gift ideas and so many other little bitty things.  but, you want to know what the heck we did for thanksgiving dinner, right?

well, let me get some photos in the queue for you, because pictures will likely do a better job explaining than mere words.

so, to make things maybe a little easier, since there were just so many pictures, i tried to insert a gallery, and now i will attempt to explain what it is you see up there.

photo 1:  these are actually failed attempts at getting puff pastry to bake into a tube.  we added honey to them and ate them as a my-god-what-the-hell-are-we-doing consolation snack.

photo 2:  these are the first round of pumpkin pie rolls, with whipped cream.  i think we called this a ‘test batch’.

photo 3:  this is sir, rolling up some green bean casserole into puff pastry.  i think we also tried it with phyllo, which shows up somewhere in another photo.  the puff pastry ended up working better, for the most part.

photo 4:  a pan of green bean casserole!

photo 5:  baked, cooked, and cut casserolls :P

photo 6:  a big round red pan of rye stuffing.

photo 7:  pumpkin pie in its early stages, before the extra flour was added, but after the walnuts.

photo 8:  some of the items on the main table, including smashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and some of the rolls.

photo 9:  some pineapple foldovers and the pumpkin pies after baking.

photo 10:  sweet potato fluff, in pre-shaped mini-pie shells.  so cute!

photo 11:  a complete plate!

photo 12:  one of our guests brought root beer vodka.  and whipped cream vodka.  we finally figured out that the root beer vodka tastes best in root beer, with vanilla rum.  with ice cream in it.  yeah, we like to experiment!

so, if you’ve held on this far through my lovely photo gallery deliberations, then i’ve got a possible treat for you.  but like last time, you’ve got to work for it.  and, one stipulation: this contest will likely only tempt you if you live in, or are visiting, seattle.  i’ve got a small pile of gift cards here that shall make great little presents for some of you!

so, here’s what i need you to do:

1.  leave a comment telling me what you’re most hoping for this holiday, whether your holiday be christmas, channukah, kwanzaa, wintergift, or whatever else.

2.  if you have a twitter, please do me a great favour, and post a link to this blog!  either let me know your @username in your comment, or dm me, so i know who to send these to.

here’s the list of gift cards available:  $10 to barrio or purple, two separate exhibit passes to the pacific science center, a $20 gift card for hotel max, 20% off at hard rock seattle, a 1/2 price appetizer card for gordon biersch, two separate $10 gift cards to thomas st bistro, a free appetizer card for pink ultra lounge, and i even have a couple separate 25% off coupons for godiva chocolatier (which are not seattle only, but ARE extremely time sensitive).  hoo boy, that’s a lot of cards!

so, as the good doctor says, allons y!

standard disclaimer:  the gift cards aforementioned have come from many places, and were not actually given in any blog-related context.  however, they’ve become such, and i must disclaim them.  carry on.
